Tips for Submitting Your Website to Google and Other Search Engines

If you are ever going to get a lot of traffic heading on over to your website, you will need to make use of search engines. Most people find new websites to visit on a regular basis through Google and other search engines. If you’re way down on page 27, chances are new visitors are not going to find your site. Be sure to make sure your website is ready for Google to index it before submitting it, otherwise there’s a possibility of no one finding your website. Here are tips to get your homepage ready to be submitted to Google and other search engines

Avoid a Splash Page. If you have some sort of Flash introduction to your website, chances are you should just get rid of it. Most users don’t want to sit and watch them, and search engine’s cannot see flash links, so if you are going to use a flash introduction, be sure to have a text link to the actual index of the page, so that search engines can read them.

Make Proper Meta Tags. Some people claim that Google ignores META tags, but this isn’t entirely the case. Google uses these tags to describe a site when the navigation code is complex and unusable to the human eye. Make sure you have valid META keywords and a valid META description.

Optimize Robots.txt. The robots.txt file is a file that you can put on your website and search engines will read it, and based on the information in the robots.txt file, the engine will ignore certain parts of your website. This will make it so that Google doesn’t accidentally index and administration or restricted pages which are for your eyes only.

Limit Dynamic Pages. If you are using PHP or ASP.NET for your website, you should consider having a mix of static content as well, because Google made a statement that they would be limiting the amount of indexing of dynamically generated pages. A mix of static web-pages and dynamically generated content might be the best way to go.

Get the Right TITLE. Whatever you have in your TITLE tag will be what displays on the search engine when your website comes up in a result. Be sure to have something that is cool and catchy there, but not something that will be excessively long.

Keep your Frames Where They Belong. If you have a website which makes use of frames, you will have to be extra careful when creating your site. You have to be sure that Google can read your frames properly, or include a “NOFRAMES” alternative for search engines to find.

Get the Right Keywords. When you are writing your pages, be sure to include keywords in your text that people are most likely to search for when searching for information about the topic your website is on. If you have a website about money, it would make sense that words like “debt consolidation”, “credit cards”, and “investing” come up quite frequently.
